Villas in France
France moves with the seasons, from the lavender fields of Provence in summer to the Alpine slopes of winter. It’s a country of quiet country roads, vibrant market towns and a deeply ingrained appreciation for good food and wine. Whether you are seeking a rural escape in the Dordogne or a coastal retreat on the Île de Ré, France offers a rich backdrop for a memorable holiday, appealing to families, couples and groups of friends alike.
About France
France’s character is one of contrasts. It can be found in the sophisticated energy of Paris, the sun-drenched pace of the Côte d'Azur, and the quiet agricultural rhythms of the heartlands. The national identity is deeply connected to its terroir – the link between land and culture – which expresses itself through gastronomy, architecture, and local customs. This respect for heritage coexists with a modern, cosmopolitan outlook, particularly in its major cities.
The country’s diverse geography shapes its atmosphere. The light in Provence and along the Riviera has famously drawn artists for centuries, while the dramatic coastline of Brittany has a wilder, more ancient feel. In regions like the Loire Valley, history is palpable in the chateaux that line the riverbanks. This variety makes France a versatile destination.
It suits travellers who appreciate nuance and are willing to explore beyond the obvious. Those with an interest in history, art, and food will find endless opportunities. Families are well-catered for with outdoor activities and accessible beaches, while couples can find seclusion in the countryside or the chic atmosphere of coastal towns. France is for the slow traveller, the food connoisseur and the cultural enthusiast.
When to visit
Spring (April to June) is a popular time to visit. The weather is generally mild and pleasant, and the countryside is green and vibrant. Crowds are fewer than in high summer, though be aware of public holidays in May which can be busy. Most seasonal restaurants and attractions begin to open from Easter onwards.
July and August are the peak holiday months, with the warmest weather, particularly in the south where temperatures regularly exceed 30°C. This is the busiest period, especially on the coast and in popular tourist areas. Expect higher demand and the need to book well in advance. All attractions are open, and the days are long.
Autumn (September to October) offers a gentle alternative. The weather remains warm, especially in the south, and the sea is still pleasant for swimming. The summer crowds have dispersed, and the landscape takes on warm autumnal colours. This is a key time for wine harvests, particularly in regions like Bordeaux and Burgundy. Many places begin to reduce their hours from October, and winter closures start in November. The ski season in the Alps typically runs from December to April.
Beaches, nature and highlights
Beyond the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, France's highlights are often regional and rooted in their landscape. In Provence, the Verdon Gorge offers dramatic scenery for hiking, while the Luberon valley is known for its hilltop villages like Gordes and Roussillon. A drive through the lavender fields around Valensole is best in early summer. On the Côte d'Azur, the coastal drive from Nice to Menton, known as the 'Corniche', provides notable sea views.
The Atlantic coast offers a different character. The beaches around Biarritz, like Côte des Basques, are famous for surfing. Further north, the Île de Ré is ringed with sandy beaches such as Plage de la Conche des Baleines, best explored by bicycle. The Dune du Pilat, Europe's tallest sand dune, is a remarkable natural sight near Arcachon Bay. For wilder landscapes, the granite coast of Brittany and the volcanic hills of the Auvergne offer distinct experiences.
Architectural highlights are widespread. The Loire Valley is home to celebrated chateaux including Chambord and Chenonceau. In the Dordogne, prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux IV (a precise replica) provide a connection to ancient history, alongside medieval towns like Sarlat-la-Canéda. The Roman amphitheatre in Nîmes and the nearby Pont du Gard aqueduct are also significant historical sites.
Food and drink
French cuisine is deeply regional, built on the principle of using fresh, local produce. The daily market is the heart of food culture in most towns and villages, where you can find seasonal fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, and cured meats. In Provence, expect dishes flavoured with olive oil, garlic, and herbs, such as ratatouille or a simple salade niçoise. The south-west, including the Dordogne, is known for richer fare like confit duck, foie gras, and walnuts.
Along the coast, seafood is paramount. In Brittany, mussels (moules marinières), oysters from Cancale, and crêpes are defining specialities. On the Mediterranean, look for bouillabaisse, a fish stew originating from Marseille, or freshly grilled sardines. Each region also has its own emblematic cheeses, from Camembert in Normandy to Roquefort in the Aveyron.
Wine is integral to the French dining experience. The experience of drinking a wine in the region it was produced is a key part of travelling here. From the rosé of Provence and the full-bodied reds of Bordeaux to the crisp white wines of the Loire Valley and the distinctive champagnes from their namesake region, the local wine list will almost always offer the best pairing for the local food.
Getting there and around
France is served by numerous international airports. Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Paris Orly (ORY) are the main international hubs. For Provence and the Côte d'Azur, Nice (NCE) and Marseille (MRS) are key airports. Driving from Nice airport to towns like Antibes takes around 30 minutes, while reaching St Tropez can take 90 minutes or more in summer traffic.
For the south-west, Bordeaux (BOD) and Bergerac (EGC) serve the Dordogne and surrounding areas. From Bergerac, it is a 30-minute drive to many popular towns in the region. The Loire Valley is accessible from Tours (TUF) or by a 2-3 hour drive from the Paris airports. The high-speed TGV train network is an efficient way to travel between major cities, such as Paris to Avignon in under three hours.
While it is possible to explore major cities without a car, renting one is generally recommended for exploring most regions of France. A car allows you to discover the smaller villages, rural landscapes, and local markets that define the character of the French countryside. Roads are generally well-maintained, but be prepared for narrow, winding lanes in older villages and rural areas. For destinations like the Île de Ré or central Paris, a car is less practical.
